Personal study consultation with Vegard

Know what to change in your studying.

Work out how to turn your math and physics study time into stronger understanding and more independent problem solving.

In a 60-minute conversation, we’ll examine your current approach and identify changes worth making. You might be stuck despite putting in the hours, or already doing well and ready to go further. You don’t need to know the cause of a difficulty before we talk.

With Vegard Gjerde, physics educator, PhD in Physics Education Research, and author of Masterful Learning.

What we can investigate together

Your studying, examined closely

Which part of your approach needs attention?

We might look at what you do when a problem stops you, how you use worked solutions, and how you check what you can do without help. I’ll ask questions to distinguish what seems to be going wrong from what your study habits reveal, then suggest changes that fit your goals and available time.

You understand the solution, but struggle to start alone.

We can look at how you use examples, what you can explain without looking, and where choosing a principle or setting up a problem becomes difficult.

You put in the hours, but progress feels uncertain.

We can examine what your study activities ask you to do, how you check your understanding, and whether your practice matches what you want to become able to do.

You want to make better use of your study time.

We can discuss your goals, your current strengths, and which changes deserve priority within the time you have. You do not need to be struggling to ask for feedback.

Get more from the time you spend studying.

Understand what’s holding you back and get practical advice to help you make better progress toward your goals.

Who you’ll speak with

I’m Vegard Gjerde.

I’m the founder of Unisium and author of Masterful Learning. I hold a PhD in Physics Education Research from the University of Bergen.

In PHYS111, introductory classical mechanics at the University of Bergen, I developed study resources for retrieval practice, self-explanation, and problem solving. My teaching in that course received the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Teaching Award for 2024. That experience informs how I investigate the gap between following a solution and solving independently.

Feedback grounded in how you actually study

  • An assessment of how your current study activities support your goals and where they fall short.
  • Feedback on which study changes deserve your attention.
  • A practical change to try, with an explanation of why it fits your situation.

We work through this together during the 60-minute conversation, using your goals and current approach as the starting point.

Before you request a session

What is included in the session?

You receive individual feedback and discuss what to try next during a 60-minute online conversation. The focus is your study approach. Ongoing messaging, a written report, and a programme of subject tutoring are outside the scope of this session.

Do I need to use Unisium?

No. The consultation is a standalone service. We can discuss your current resources and study approach whether or not you use Unisium.

How does the annual-subscription discount work?

A paid consultation includes $50 off one annual Unisium payment. It applies once, including toward an annual renewal for an existing subscriber. Future renewals are at the usual price. We’ll arrange redemption individually; it does not enrol you in a subscription. Subscription access remains subject to Unisium’s current availability.

Will the session be recorded?

Recording is optional and would be agreed separately before the session. You can choose an unrecorded conversation. If there is material that could help other learners, I would ask for separate permission for the specific excerpts and intended uses before publication.

What happens after I request a session?

I’ll review your request for fit and availability. If we agree to go ahead, we’ll arrange a time and confirm payment and cancellation details before you pay. Sending a request does not reserve a session or commit you to a purchase.

Let’s work out what to change.
